Privacy Policy
CameraAdapt · Last updated 28 September 2026
CameraAdapt is operated by Oskar Bruce, United Kingdom.
CameraAdapt helps you recreate a photograph's look on your own camera and lens. This policy explains what the app does with your data. In short: the app has no accounts, collects only anonymous usage statistics, and keeps your library on your device.
We do not require an account, and we do not sell or share your personal data with third parties for advertising.
What stays on your device
- Your selected camera, lens and editing app.
- Looks you save, including the adapted settings and shooting steps.
- Thumbnails of reference photos you upload.
- Your onboarding answers and app preferences.
This information is stored locally on your iPhone. Deleting the app removes it.
Photos you upload
If you choose to analyse your own reference photo, the app resizes a copy of that image and sends it to our analysis service, which forwards it to OpenAI's API to describe the photograph's lighting, depth of field and colour treatment.
- The image is used only to produce that description and is not stored by our service after the request completes. OpenAI keeps API requests, including the image, in abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days, unless the law requires longer, and then deletes them. We do not ask OpenAI to store anything beyond that.
- Only the resulting description and a local thumbnail are kept, on your device.
- OpenAI processes the image as our service provider under its API terms and does not use it to train its models.
- Photos from the bundled reference library are never uploaded. When you adapt a bundled look, your camera settings are calculated on your iPhone; the app then sends a short text description of the look together with your chosen camera, lens and editing app to our service, which asks OpenAI's API to write the editing recipe for that pairing. No image is sent.
If you never upload a photo, no image ever leaves your iPhone.
Revoking your consent
Photo analysis is entirely optional, and you can withdraw your consent at any time: open the Profile tab and turn off "Analyse my own photos". No image is then sent anywhere: the upload button stays, but tapping it asks for your consent again first, and nothing is sent unless you agree. The bundled reference looks continue to work: their camera settings are calculated on your device, and only the look's text description and your gear selection are sent to write the editing recipe. No image is involved. You can turn the setting back on whenever you like.
Technical information we receive
Whenever the app contacts our service — for photo analysis or to write an editing recipe — it receives a randomly generated device identifier (Apple's "identifier for vendor") so we can apply fair-use limits and prevent abuse. It is not linked to your name, email or Apple ID, and it changes if you delete and reinstall the app.
Anonymous usage statistics
To see which parts of the app work and where people get stuck, the app sends short usage events to PostHog, our analytics provider. For example: which onboarding step was shown, that an adaptation finished for a given camera, lens, editing app and bundled look, that a recipe could not be written, or that the subscription screen was opened or a purchase started.
- Events carry a random identifier created by the app, the app version, the build type, basic device information (such as the iOS version and iPhone model) and the approximate country derived from the connection. They are not linked to your name, email address or Apple ID.
- Events never contain your photos, anything you type, or your email address. For an uploaded reference, only the fact that it was an upload is recorded, never the image or its description.
- The app does not record your screen or your taps, and it does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- RevenueCat passes your subscription events (such as a trial starting or renewing) to PostHog under the same random identifier, so we can see how subscriptions relate to use of the app.
- Profile → Delete my data replaces the identifier with a new one, so nothing sent afterwards can be joined to what came before.
Feedback and requests you send
Profile → Help & feedback, the "Something wrong? Tell me" link and "Camera not listed?" let you send us a message. Nothing is sent unless you tap Send, and the form lists everything that goes with your message before you do.
- Bug reports and feature requests contain what you write and, only if you add one, a screenshot you choose. The app attaches: its version and build, your iOS version, your iPhone's model identifier (for example "iPhone16,1"), the camera, lens and editing app selected in the app, whether you have Pro, the app's most recent error message, and, when you start from a result, the identifier of that look.
- Camera and lens requests contain the model name you type, and the app and iOS version.
- None of these includes your name, email address, Apple ID or the device identifier described above (the device identifier is used only to count messages for the fair-use limit and is not stored with them).
- We use them only to fix problems and decide which features, cameras and lenses to add. They are stored in our database and, for screenshots, in private storage that only we can read.
- If you choose Message the founder, your message goes through your own email account, so we see your email address. We use it only to reply.
How long data is kept
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| Uploaded photo | Not stored by our service beyond the request. OpenAI, which analyses it, keeps API requests in abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days, unless the law requires longer, then deletes them. |
| Text sent to write an edit recipe | For a bundled look, the look's text description and your camera, lens and editing app choice are sent to OpenAI, which keeps API requests in abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days, unless the law requires longer, then deletes them. Our service caches the resulting recipe, keyed on the look, gear and editing app only, with no device identifier, so the next person with the same pairing gets it without a new request. Recipes for photos you uploaded are never cached. |
| Rate-limiting device identifier | Stored in our database as one row per device per day (the identifier and a request count), used only to apply the daily fair-use limit. Rows for past days are periodically deleted. The identifier is never stored alongside any look, gear or recipe data. |
| Bug reports, feature requests and their screenshots | Kept until the issue is dealt with, and deleted no later than 12 months after you send them. |
| Camera and lens requests | Kept until the camera or lens is added, and deleted no later than 12 months after you send them. |
| Emails you send us | Kept in our inbox while we are in touch, and deleted no later than 12 months after the conversation ends. |
| Anonymous usage statistics | Kept by PostHog for no longer than 12 months, then deleted. |
| Saved looks, thumbnails, gear and preferences | Stored on your iPhone and kept until you delete them in the app or delete the app itself. |
| Subscription status | Held by our subscription provider for as long as the subscription record exists. |
Subscriptions
Purchases are processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat, our subscription provider. We receive your subscription status and an anonymous purchase identifier. We never receive your payment card details — those stay with Apple.
Third parties who process data for us
We use five service providers, and no others:
- OpenAI — analyses an uploaded reference photo and returns a description of it, and writes editing recipes from a text description of a look and your gear selection.
- Supabase — hosts our service: the functions the app calls, the recipe cache, the fair-use counter, and the feedback, requests and screenshots you choose to send.
- RevenueCat — manages subscription status.
- PostHog — receives the anonymous usage statistics described above.
- Apple — processes payments and delivers the app.
Each of these providers is contractually required, under the agreements and terms that govern our use of their services, to protect your data to a standard at least equivalent to the one described in this policy, to process it only for the purposes set out above and on our instructions, and not to use it for their own unrelated purposes. We do not share your data with anyone else.
Photo library access
The app uses Apple's system photo picker. We only ever receive the specific image you choose; the app cannot browse your photo library.
Your rights (UK and EU)
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, data protection law gives you the following rights over your personal data:
- Access — ask what personal data we hold about you.
- Correction — ask us to correct data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Deletion — ask us to erase your data.
- Portability — receive your data in a common, machine-readable format.
- Objection and restriction — object to, or ask us to limit, our processing.
- Withdrawing consent — turn off photo analysis at any time, as described above.
To exercise any of these rights, email support@cameraadapt.com and we will respond within one month. Because the app has no accounts, most of your data never reaches us and lives only on your iPhone, where you can view and delete it directly. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or your local supervisory authority.
Children
CameraAdapt is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your choices
- Turn photo analysis off in Profile at any time.
- Delete any saved look from within the app.
- Delete the app to remove all locally stored data.
- Manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple ID settings.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will update this page and the date above.

Web version addendum
cameraadapt.com · Last updated 25 September 2026
The web version at cameraadapt.com adds accounts and subscriptions to the app described above. Everything else in the policy above still applies; this section says what is different on the web.
Accounts
You create an account with an email address and password, or with Google. We store your email, an optional username and profile picture, how you heard about us (if you tell us), your camera, lens and editing-app choices, your saved rigs and looks, your adaptation history, and your plan status. Accounts, sign-in and the database are hosted by Supabase (Supabase Inc.), a service provider that processes this data on our instructions.
Photos you upload on the web
Photo analysis on the web works the same way as on iPhone and needs the same explicit consent, which you can withdraw in Account → Privacy. One difference: the resized copy (up to 1024 pixels on the long edge) is kept in your account's private storage for 30 days so your Library can show it, and is then deleted automatically. You can delete it sooner with "Delete my data" in your account.
Adaptations and popularity counts
Each adaptation you run is stored in your account so you can save and reopen it. Counts of how often a library look has been adapted, and how many people liked it, are shown on the site in aggregate only; they never identify you.
Subscriptions on the web
Web subscriptions are billed by Stripe (Stripe, Inc.). Stripe holds your card details; we never see them. We receive your Stripe customer id, your plan, its status and the trial and renewal dates, and store them against your account so the site knows what you can use.
Fair-use counters
Instead of a device identifier, the web counts adaptations per account per period to apply the limits of your plan.
Deleting your account
Account → Delete Account removes your account, gear, rigs, library, uploads and counters, and cancels any subscription. This is immediate and cannot be undone.
